Is Max Verstappen Trapped? Why F1’s Biggest Star Might Not Have an Escape Route

The 2026 Formula 1 season has barely begun, but the biggest storyline in the paddock isn't about who will win the championship, it's about whether Max Verstappen will even be on the grid next year.

Red Bull Racing's dramatic fall from grace, compounded by the high-profile departure of key personnel like race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, has fueled intense speculation that the four-time world champion is looking for an exit strategy. Verstappen himself hasn't shied away from the rumors, openly criticizing the new 2026 regulations and hinting that he could walk away from the sport entirely.

But according to former F1 driver and Sky Sports pundit Martin Brundle, Verstappen's threat to "jump ship" might be easier said than done. In a blunt assessment of the current driver market, Brundle highlighted a harsh reality: the top teams simply don't have room for him.

"I'm not sure it's that easy for Max to just jump ship at the moment," Brundle explained. "Mercedes have got two homegrown talents in their car in [George] Russell and [Kimi] Antonelli. McLaren are set fair with a tremendous line-up that gels very much, Ferrari with [Charles] Leclerc and [Lewis] Hamilton."

Brundle's analysis cuts to the core of Verstappen's dilemma. If the Dutchman wants to leave Red Bull for purely performance reasons, his options are severely limited. The three teams currently outperforming Red Bull: Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari, are all heavily invested in their current driver pairings.

Mercedes is banking on the future with their young prodigy Antonelli alongside the established Russell. McLaren has arguably the most harmonious and effective pairing on the grid with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. And Ferrari has committed to a blockbuster lineup featuring Leclerc and seven-time champion Hamilton.

"If somebody springs out at one of those cars, then there's a slot for Max," Brundle added. "But the teams can't if they're contracted and won't want to boot out some great drivers, with a great driver line-up."

This leaves Verstappen in an incredibly precarious position. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies recently insisted that Verstappen's future is "unaffected by behind-scenes moves," emphasizing that the driver is still "living and breathing this team." But with the RB22 reportedly struggling with a significant weight disadvantage and aerodynamic instability, Verstappen's patience is undoubtedly wearing thin.

If Red Bull's major upgrade package for the Miami Grand Prix fails to deliver, the pressure will only mount. But as Brundle pointed out, unless a shock vacancy opens up at a rival top team, Verstappen might have to choose between staying in a midfield car or making good on his threat to leave Formula 1 altogether.

The AlexOnTrack Verdict:

Max Verstappen is the best driver in the world, but even he can't force a top team to tear up a contract. The reality is that Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari have built their futures without him in mind. If Red Bull can't fix the RB22, Verstappen's bluff might be called. He either accepts a rebuilding phase at Milton Keynes, or he walks away from F1 entirely. However, how many of those teams would rather have Max or one of their current drivers, I rather have Max and I think many of those teams would agree with me...
