The Formula 1 paddock is a pressure cooker of politics, media obligations, and technical regulations. For a driver like Max Verstappen, who famously prefers the purity of racing over the pageantry of the sport, the 2026 season has become a nightmare.

With Red Bull Racing in a state of internal collapse, a car that is being outperformed by midfield runners, and the impending departure of his trusted race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, the four-time world champion is looking for an exit. And he seems to have found it in the grueling, unfiltered world of GT3 endurance racing.
While the rest of the F1 grid uses the enforced April break to rest or run simulator sessions, Verstappen is fully immersed in his new passion project: Verstappen Racing. The Dutchman is preparing for his highly anticipated debut at the legendary Nürburgring 24 Hours in May, driving a Red Bull-liveried Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO . This is not just a hobby; it is a statement of intent.
The Nürburgring Obsession

Verstappen’s pivot to GT racing has been swift and aggressive. He secured his DMSB Nordschleife licence late last year and immediately won his debut race in the Nürburgring Endurance Series (NLS) driving a Ferrari 296 GT3 . Now, he has partnered with Winward Racing and Mercedes-AMG, teaming up with endurance heavyweights Dani Juncadella, Jules Gounon, and Lucas Auer .
"The Nürburgring is a special place. There is no other race track quite like it," Verstappen recently stated. "The 24-hour race at the Nürburgring has been on my bucket list for a long time, so I'm very excited that we can now make it happen" .
The commitment is staggering. NLS organizers, reportedly lobbied by Mercedes and Toto Wolff, even moved the NLS2 race to fit between the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix just so Verstappen could compete . He qualified on pole and won the race on track, though the team was later disqualified due to a tire usage error . He will return to the "Green Hell" for the 24-hour qualifiers on April 18-19 .
The "Verstappen Effect" on Endurance Racing

Verstappen’s presence is completely transforming the German endurance racing scene. The 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours has hit its absolute maximum capacity of 150 cars, forcing organizers to turn away teams for the first time in years . Eight different manufacturers, including factory-supported efforts from Mercedes and BMW, have flooded the entry list .
The fan interest is equally massive. Last year, the event drew nearly 300,000 spectators, and with Verstappen now confirmed as the main attraction, attendance records are widely expected to shatter . The hype was perfectly encapsulated when his car's livery was revealed via a spectacular B.A.S.E. jump from a 131-meter cooling tower in Germany .
A Growing Trend Among F1 Drivers

Verstappen is not the only F1 driver seeking refuge in GT cars. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll is making his GT World Challenge Europe debut this weekend at Paul Ricard, driving an Aston Martin Vantage GT3 in a six-hour endurance race .
Interestingly, Stroll consulted Verstappen about the move during the Japanese Grand Prix weekend. "We talked about who to contact, and since he's already involved in GT racing, we discussed it a bit," Stroll revealed. "Everyone enjoys driving GT3 cars - they're fun" .
That word—"fun"—is exactly what seems to be missing from Verstappen’s Formula 1 experience right now. Former world champion Damon Hill recently suggested that if Verstappen is so displeased with F1, he should "stop and do something else" . It appears Verstappen is taking that advice to heart.
The Writing on the Wall
The contrast between Verstappen’s F1 misery and his GT racing joy is impossible to ignore. In Formula 1, he is battling a terrible RB22 chassis, complaining about the 2026 regulations, and watching his team’s leadership structure dissolve. In GT racing, he is building his own team, driving iconic tracks, and experiencing the raw thrill of motorsport without the suffocating politics.

With performance clauses reportedly active in his Red Bull contract and Lambiase heading to McLaren, the Nürburgring 24 Hours might be more than just a bucket-list item for Max Verstappen. It might be an audition for his next career chapter.
