Max Doesn’t Hold Back: 2026 F1 Cars “Not Much Fun to Drive”

Max Verstappen dropped a verdict in Bahrain that is already echoing across the paddock, and the season has not even started yet.

During pre-season testing, the four-time world champion did not just criticize minor handling quirks or setup limitations. He went straight to the core of the issue, saying the new 2026 Formula 1 cars lack the joy of driving a true F1 machine. He even compared the experience to something closer to “Formula E on steroids.”

That comment carries weight.

This is not about whether Red Bull is fast. It is not about lap time potential or testing programs. Verstappen’s frustration is deeper than that. It is about the soul of the sport.

Under the new regulations, drivers are constantly managing energy harvesting, deployment phases, lift-and-coast behavior, and battery state. In many cases, that comes at the expense of attacking corners and driving on instinct. Verstappen has made it clear that drivers can adapt, but adapting does not mean the experience is enjoyable.

When a driver who has won everywhere from Monaco to Monza says the car is not fun, people listen.

Why this matters

This sets the tone for the entire 2026 season.

When the biggest star in Formula 1 openly questions whether the cars are enjoyable to drive, it opens the door for others to speak more honestly. Fans are already uneasy about the sport becoming too managed, too artificial, and too dependent on systems rather than instinct. Verstappen just gave that concern a headline.

If drivers and fans start aligning on this criticism, pressure will build on the FIA and the teams to find solutions. That could mean sporting tweaks, deployment adjustments, or changes to overtaking tools designed to bring aggression back into the racing.

Because if the cars do not feel like Formula 1, no amount of speed on paper will save the show.
